Word Biblical Commentary
The references concerning the coming of many from east and west (e.g., Ps 107:3; Isa 43:5; Bar 4:37) were understood as referring to the return of diaspora Jews to Israel. The great family of the covenant people of God would gather with the patriarchs, who symbolize Israel, in the new eschatological kingdom and feast together with them—thus manifesting in this table communion their oneness (cf. Comment on 9:10–11). But now with the coming of the Messiah, that exclusivism is turned on its head in an apparent reversal of salvation-history. It is the Gentiles who are being called from the ends of the earth (contra Davies-Allison; cf. France, Luz). The centurion represents in effect the beginning of a stream of Gentiles who will come from east and west to join the eschatological banquet, while—and consider the offense of this unparalleled teaching—the Jews, “the sons of the kingdom,” will themselves (in large part, i.e., who reject the Messiah) be rejected, although, of course, this does not apply to the OT saints. uiJoi; th`" basileiva", “sons of the kingdom,” means those who belong to the kingdom (cf. “sons of the covenant” at Qumran; 1QM 17:3; cf. Matt 9:15). The true “sons of the kingdom” are now those who respond to the proclamation of Jesus (cf. 13:38; cf. 5:45). The theological point is made in absolute terms (even though hyperbolically; thus Davies-Allison), though of course all of Jesus’ followers and the early Church were Jews and hence “children of the kingdom.” The expression to; skovto" to; ejxwvteron, “the outer darkness,” here refers to the greatest possible contrast with the brilliantly illuminated banquet hall (cf. 22:13; 25:30; for darkness as judgment generally, see 2 Esdr 7:93; 1 Enoch 63:10; Pss. Sol. 14:4; 15:10). “Weeping and grinding of teeth” is Matthew’s favorite language for referring to the experience of eschatological judgment (cf. 13:42, 50; 22:13; 24:51; 25:30).

Zondervan Bible Study
The "subjects of the kingdom" are the Jews, who see themselves as sons of Abraham (cf. 3:9-10), belonging to the kingdom by right. But Jesus reverses roles (cf. 21:43); and the sons of the kingdom are thrown aside, left out of the future messianic banquet, and consigned to darkness where there are tears and gnashing of teeth--elements common to descriptions of hell (i.e., gehenna; see comment on Mk 9:43-48).
